Stalkerware apps have been exposed, hacked, and leaked customer data online, putting millions of users at risk. At least 27 stalkerware companies since 2017 have suffered from data breaches, with many more likely to be hiding similar secrets. The victims of these hacks are not just the companies themselves, but the innocent people whose personal data was compromised.
The problem is not just limited to a few rogue companies. Dozens of stalkerware providers have either been hacked or had significant data exposure in recent years. Four stalkerware companies were hacked multiple times, demonstrating a pattern of poor security practices. uMobix, a stalkerware provider, exposed sensitive customer data after a hacktivist scraped payment information of over 500,000 customers and published it online. The FBI has also warned about the growing threat of stalkerware.
Stalkerware’s Dark Side
Stalkerware companies often market their software to jealous partners who use it to access their victims’ phones remotely. These apps claim to track location, monitor calls, and even record phone conversations. But the truth is, these companies are not just profiting from fear and paranoia, they’re also putting thousands of people’s privacy at risk.
The data breaches aren’t just limited to customer information. Stalkerware companies often store sensitive data about the people they’re tracking, including their contact lists, location history, and even private messages. This data is then vulnerable to being stolen and sold on the dark web.
The Consequences of a Stalkerware Hack
When a stalkerware company is hacked, the consequences can be catastrophic. Victims’ personal data is exposed, and their privacy is compromised. In extreme cases, stalkers can use this data to track their victims’ every move, putting them in real danger. The psychological trauma caused by such invasions of privacy can be devastating, leading to anxiety, depression, and even PTSD.
The companies themselves also suffer from these hacks. They face financial losses, damage to their reputation, and potentially even legal action. The long-term consequences of a stalkerware hack can be severe, and it’s only a matter of time before more companies suffer the same fate.
